Bedside Reading
Christmas was kind to me. I got a couple of NEW books on old topics :organic gardening and mulching. My family used to own one of Ruth Stout's first books on mulching but it got lost along the way. My Mum sourced this newer edition through the internet. For those who are unaquainted with Ruth Stout, she is a revolutionary! She was over 70 yet maintained a massive veggie and flower garden. Her secret was simple - a lot of mulch, which reduced her labour to almost nothing. The mulch eliminated weeds, the need for tilling, fertilizing or excessive watering. The other book is by our local hero Carolyn Herriot. What an inspiration it is to read about the 'can do' activites all through the year here in Victoria. Her book inspired me to get back out and dig in my compost mid-January and boy did I have fun!
I hope you have some favourite gardening books to get into this winter.
